Jessica Langley - "By Cooling Shade"

Die US-amerikanische Künstlerin Jessica Langley verbrachte im Juli
eine Artist-in-Residence-Zeit in Hilsbach und experimentierte mit der Natur, indem sie Papier aus gesammelten Pilzen schöpfte und diese Blätter mit UV-Licht reaktiver Farbe, Pflanzenteilen und Worten reagieren ließ.
Ein Großthema ihrer Arbeit ist Landschaft und damit die uns umgebende Natur.
Es geht ihr dabei genauso um die rücksichtslose Benutzung und Ausbeutung der Natur wie auch deren Idealisierung in der Geschichte.
The work on exhibition was made during a residency at Hilsbach Kunst Kultur in July 2017. This handmade paper is made from polypore mushrooms found in forests near Hilsbach and Berlin. I am using text along with weeds, plants, flowers, and other organic material found near Hilsbach to create an image which causes friction between the text and materials used. How can language shape what we see? The words are pulled from a forestry terminology, but in English they have double meanings. The words are related to the cultivation, control, and commodification of the forest. At play are handmade processes, human understanding, and capitalist substructure.
